My name is Lisa Guenther. I ranch with my family near Turtle Lake, Saskatchewan (Treaty Six).
I decided to call my business 1892 Ranch in honour of my grandmother, Mary Guenther (née Haigh), and her family. Her mother's family founded the Sarnia Ranch in 1892 near Walsh, NWT (now Alberta).

Mary went on to ranch just south of Maple Creek, Sask. When her husband died in a tractor roll-over, she not only continued to run the ranch, but raised six kids on her own (including my dad).

Mary Guenther's legacy lives on with her entire family, scattered across North America now. I remember her for her grit, intelligence, interest in history and politics, independence, kindness, fear of mice and love for the land. While I'm now ranching in a different area, I feel connected to my family history, and grateful that the land has sustained us for generations.
